Get Big Huge Legs with High Reps
One of the fastest ways to get big huge legs is with high reps. The main reason why a lot of bodybuilders and weight trainers don’t often use high reps to grow big legs is simply because it hurts. High reps leg training is one of the most high intensity workouts you will ever have and takes a lot of mental discipline due to the immense pain barrier you need to go through to perform the set.
When I say that you can get big huge legs with high reps you may be thinking I mean you will need to drop the amount of weight you lift quite considerably to be able to complete a high rep set. However, this is not the case. Of course you will need to drop the weight to some degree to be able to finish a set in the 15-25 rep range compared to the weight you would normally max out on for 10 rep sets. The thing is though, you still need to keep the weight up close to your max weight, maybe around 20% less than your max.
If you are thinking how could I do 15-25 reps on a weight that is only 20% less than my max, the answer is, you are going to have to push through the pain barrier and find that inner mental strength to push that weight for at least 15 reps. The best exercise to use to get big huge legs with high reps is the leg press. The leg press is one of the most productive exercises to build big legs alongside doing squats which everyone knows is a great mass builder.
As a personal trainer I have been training young and older bodybuilders and have mentioned to them at the beginning of their leg training day that we will be doing high reps on the leg press but told them we will be keeping the weight close to their 10 rep max weight. Usually the older guys ask how will it be possible to do high reps if the weight is still almost as high as their usual max weight. My usual response is kind of like your mother telling you to eat all your vegetables before you leave the dinner table. You don’t want to eat the vegetables but eventually you eat them and then your mother lets you leave the table. This is what I say to my personal training clients. Until you finish all your reps on all your sets, you are not going to get up from that leg press machine. Have a guess what always happens, 100% of the time? Every one of my clients does the 15 or 25 reps I demand for each set with the heavy weight and then we move onto another exercise.
I know that in most cases if I was not there screaming at them to lift the weight and finish every rep for every high reps set, they would probably not do it. However, all of my personal training clients and my own bodybuilding training partners have reported great muscular gains and have been able to get big huge legs with high reps. It is hard to pump out 25 reps with a weight that is only 20% lighter than your max weight on the leg press and you might have to rest for a brief moment in between reps after about the 15th rep, but pushing yourself to the limit is the way to get big legs.
If you plan to be a champion bodybuilder this is something you will need to be able to do by yourself. Not everyone can afford a personal trainer and not everyone wants a personal trainer but to build huge muscles you need to be able to push yourself to finish the high rep set even if no one else is there. It is extremely difficult and painful to perform high reps with heavy weights but it will not only make your muscles big and strong but it will make you a mentally stronger and tougher person which will help you in every other area of your life. Pushing through the pain barrier in the gym and becoming a champion bodybuilder is what I believe helped
