Importance of Fiber in Your Diet

There certainly is no doubt about the importance of fiber in your diet since without it you may end up with serious health problems. Fiber is important in a number of ways from decreasing the risk of heart disease to avoiding constipation. Without an adequate amount of fiber in your diet your body simply cannot function properly and eventually you could end up with any number of debilitating physical ailments.

When considering the importance of fiber in your diet it is imperative to understand that there are two necessary types of fiber and they are soluble fiber and insoluble fiber. To maintain a healthy body you need to ingest both types of fiber on a daily basis.

The soluble type is an important fiber in your diet as it attracts water while your body is trying to digest food. By attracting water the soluble fiber slows down the digestive process and allows your stomach and intestines to absorb more of the essential nutrients from the food you eat.

Just as important is insoluble fiber which has the effect of allowing food to pass through the digestive passages of your body and be eliminated through the bowel. The rougher and slightly abrasive mechanism of insoluble fiber keeps your intestines unclogged and helps to avoid any blockages in your system that may lead to constipation.

It is vital to understand the importance of fiber in your diet because without it your body cannot absorb the necessary vitamins and minerals contained within your food or pass that food through your system and eliminate it as body waste. If you have ever suffered from long term constipation you are running a high risk of digestive diseases and potential colon cancer as old food gets stuck in your intestines and can cause an unnatural blockage. This blockage causes constipation and pains in the stomach. You can avoid these problems easily by eating regular amounts of insoluble fiber.

Popular sources of soluble fiber include many types of fruit and vegetables, lentils, beans, nuts and oat bran. To increase the amount of soluble fiber in your diet it is ideal to eat your fruit with the skin on as the skin is loaded with essential fiber.

Healthy ways to ingest insoluble fiber in your diet are by eating anything made from whole wheat like certain types of bread, vegetables and foods containing bran. These insoluble types of fiber help push the food safely through your system and allow your body to eliminate waste easily and regularly.

With an understanding of the importance of fiber in your diet you have a much better chance of remaining healthy as your body ages. Eating enough soluble and insoluble fiber will help alleviate constipation problems and give you a fuller feeling after eating which minimizes the chances of getting fat which in turn cuts down the chances of heart disease and diabetes. Eating regular amounts of fiber will give your more energy through the day and allow you to sleep more soundly at night as your body moves in a regular cycle.
