Why Fad Diets Dont Work

The main reason why fad diets don’t work is simply because fad diets are unhealthy and don’t supply you with enough of the nutritional requirements you need from numerous food sources. Some people can stick to a diet if it is the right type of diet for them if it still allows them to eat a good mixture of high quality protein from meat, chicken, fish or eggs, an adequate amount of complex carbohydrates like rice, pasta or cereals and a little bit of fat. You simply cannot live in a healthy way without at least a little bit of fat in your diet.

The following is a list of some of the common fad diets I have heard about over the years I have been involved in bodybuilding and working as a personal trainer and reasons why fad diets don’t work. No matter how much you want to lose weight and how many so called experts who are pushing their own magical fad diet tell you that this is the one, you need to understand that even though you want it to work, put simply, fad diets don’t work.

Diets that claim a particular ingredient like a herb or a “special supplement” will burn the fat from your body.

Reason: There is no such herb or “special supplement” that will burn fat other than dangerous chemicals or drugs like amphetamines.

Any diet that claims you can lose weight without exercise or says you will lose weight while sleeping.

Reason: Your body burns calories when you are moving or exercising and not when you are asleep.

Why Fad Diets Don’t Work 3

Eat all the chocolate you want but nothing else and watch all the fat disappear from your body.

Reason: Chocolate is not only full or sugar but is high in fat as well and has almost no protein in it. You don’t have to be a brain surgeon to know this one wont work.

This is one of my personal favorites. Eat what ever you want and as much as you want before lunchtime and you will never get fat.

Reason: Even if you only ate 1 meal per day your metabolism would slow down to the point it would probably shut down completely and then whatever you ate would not metabolize in your body and eventually turn to fat.

The grapefruit only diet, eat all the grapefruit you like and lose all your bodyfat in record time. I know someone who stupidly tried this fad diet.

Reason: If you ate only grapefruit you would probably lose weight but you would probably die of malnutrition. There is no way on Earth anyone could stay on this diet without going insane. The girl I knew stayed on it for a few weeks and all the acid from the grapefruit burnt a hole in her stomach lining from a terrible ulcer she developed while on this diet and she ended up in hospital.

Any diet that makes a claim that you will lose more than 1 kilogram or 2 pounds per week on a regular basis week after week is an outright lie or contains some type of drug intake.

Reason: Your bodyweight will fluctuate everyday since it is made up of 70% water but you will not be able to burn any more than 1 kilogram of bodyfat each week continually.

You have probably heard about dozens of other fad diets but these are just a few to give you an example of why fad diets don’t work and to remember there is no easy way out if you want to lose weight fast without eating properly or exercising.

    Good points. It’s so hard to convince people that there is no “easy” way to losing weight. I think diets are popular because people are given a plan and they think they can follow it. Fad diets add the immediate gratification, “It’ll be off in no time.” Overall, healthy eating though? Who has time to learn how to incorporate all aspects of nutrition?
